History of Mount Hope

History

The first known settler arrived around 1733.
The Town of Mount Hope was created from Towns of Deerpark and Wallkill in 1825.

Geography

The Town of Mount Hope consists of a total area of 25.5 square miles.
New York Route 211 is an east-west highway in the town.

Demographics

According to the census in the year 2000 there were 6,639 people, 1,582 households, and 1,218 families living within the town limits.  There were 1,582 homes and 40.5% that had children under 18 that resided in them.

Communities and  locations in Mount Hope

FCI Otisville - A federal prison.

Finchville - A hamlet located in the southwest part of Mount Hope, which was named after the earliest known settler in the town.

Guymard - A hamlet in the southwest portion of the town.

Mount Hope -  The hamlet of Mount Hope.

Otisville - The village of Otisville.

Otisville Correctional Facility - A NY medium security prison.
